BEIJING (Asian Metal) 30 May 08 – Having been rising for a prolonged period, the magnesium market in China slows down late this week. Many consumers are watching the market instead of buying, taking the price of RMB36,500-37,000/t (USD5,259-5,331/t) ex works unacceptable. The market turns stagnant and is expected to slide down by a small margin in the near future.

A Shanxi-based producer, reported that the magnesium market has shown some signs of slowing down as more consumers suspend purchasing. “Many consumers have stopped buying magnesium ingot, claiming that they could not accept the price above RMB36,500/t (USD5,259/t) ex works,” said the source. “We haven’t concluded any deals in the past three days.”

Running at its full capacity of 5,000tpy, the smelter is fulfilling a few contracts signed at RMB36,000-36,500/t (USD5,187-5,259/t) ex works and has not sold any Jun-output in advance. “If buyers continue to watch the market in the following week, some smelters may reduce the magnesium offers to stimulate demand,” the source stated.

A Jiangsu-based magnesium alloy producer confirmed the slowdown of the magnesium market and revealed that some smelters in South Shanxi have already begun lowering offers from RMB36,600-36,800/t (USD5,274-5,303/t) ex works to RMB36,400-36,600/t (USD5,245-5,274/t) ex works to promote sales. However, few deals have been concluded as most consumers prefer to watch for a while when the market is showing signs of slipping.

The source revealed that the company has reduced the consumption of magnesium ingot by half from previous 150tpm due to the high price. The most recent purchase was made at RMB36,500/t (USD5,259/t) ex works early this week. According to the source, many magnesium alloy producers and consumers in die-casting sectors have cut the consumption of magnesium ingot pressured by the high price, leading to a slowdown in demand. Additionally, many magnesium smelters have not yet begun selling the output in June, for some of them predict the market may rise further and some dare not sign long-term contracts under the volatile market. “As many smelters have some materials in stock and consumers may keep watching the market in a short time, the magnesium price is likely to drop.”

However, industry insiders believe that the price will not fall much as demand is still there. More activity will be seen in the market after the price decreases to a certain level, which may stimulate magnesium producers to raise offers again.
